The
Pond
Pond
August 2006 after the upgrades
After more than 5 years of life with
the pond, it was time to upgrade and expand. The old pond liner had a
significant leak that pushed the upgrades along. ;-) Basically we
increased the pond size by almost 50%. It took us digging for about a week
after work. In the list of upgrades, I built a nice box/bench for our
filters and UV sterilizer for the pond. It also serves as the hub for the
electrical for it as well. The pond lost all but 1 of 3 of the previous
pumps for one that was more efficient that quadrupled the GPH capacity. We
are now running 1, 1200GPH and 1, 2900GPH pump. The larger pull have the
current as the smaller one. The fish seem much happier with all of their
new running around room that the additions add. The waterfalls add a great
place to grow new plants for the pond and will probably get some fish all their
own in time.

Pond pictures as of Jan 2004 Winter storm
We had a pretty hard winter storm in January that lasted almost a week. We were a bit concerned about our 4 little tubby Koi fish, but they do what they do best... NOTHING. They just stayed on the bottom asleep.
You can see them camped out in their Koi garage together.
A much better photo of them. The water is almost 4 foot deep where they are at currently, so you can see how clear the water is.

The Craig Pond
July 2001 after construction.
Area before we dug and installed the pond
Updates: We were very luck to find a wonderful family with 4 Koi fish that needed a home. We were also fortunate to be given quite a few plants. As of 1/1/2002 I am proud to say that all fish and plants are weathering the winter in grand fashion. The fish are slumbering away the cold months asleep under cover of water clover and other plants.
This is the before picture of the future pond home. On the left is the finished pond with fountain, waterfall, and small river. Total time spent on this project was 60 + hours. Pond dimension is roughly 8'X11'. Pond depth in the middle is 33" deep with a foot wide shelf around the edge that is approximately 12" - 14" in depth for areas to place plants. We have two pumps in the pond. One 500GPH, and one 300GPH. We have both pumps connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) plug in the event that a pump cracks and electrifies the water. Water temperature after filling was 58 degrees, which made working in the pond interesting....
We stocked the pond with 6 different plants and a wide variety of fish.
Here is a picture of Trinkets, the Supervisor of the little pond project. She did most of her bossing from the sliding door.
The picture on the right shows almost the whole pond at night. The picture on the right is of the waterfall. We installed 2 low voltage lights that are connected to the other landscaping lighting. We use X10 to turn on the landscaping lighting at dusk and off at dawn. We have a total of 18 halogen lights around the yard.
Here is a close-up of the fountainl at night showing the underwater lighting.
Here is a picture that shows both lights. The one in the back is shining on the waterfall.
